Did you know?
There are around 700 million dyslexic people worldwide.
Research shows that approx 41% - 55% of families with one child with ADHD, have one parent with the learning difference too.
When you hear the phrase(s) “neurodiversity” or “neurodiverse” - what springs to mind?
The reality is, many of us don’t know much about neurodiversity, which is ironic considering that around 15% of the UK population alone (roughly 1 in 7 people) are neurodiverse!
Harvard Medical School define neurodiversity as “Neurodiversity describes the idea that people experience and interact with the world around them in many different ways; there is no one “right” way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits. It is often used in the context of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as other neurological or developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities.”
For those of us who do have a basic understanding of neurodiversity, will be familiar with the above statement and automatically default to associating someone who is neurodiverse with autism. Although not completely untrue, neurodiversity covers more than just autism, and understanding neurodiversity as an employer can be a steadfast way to create an inclusive and more enjoyable workplace for all.
